Excelsior (寫作期末考)

      When it comes to the knowledge of our life, most of us will consider books to be the most precious knowledge. That’s kind of correct in some way. As the proverb goes, “Excelsior!” This is the word that I had believed for years.
     What do I mean about “excelsior”? In fact, I’d been learning about composing some article, fiction and poem for about four years. At the beginning, I had no teacher to tech me how to do this kind of thing. All of a sudden, I wanted to try to write something for my life in one day. However, in Taiwanese students’ point of view, all we have to do is learning what the exam is going to test us but not following our creativity. Therefore, I was learning by myself with the statement like “just give it a shot!” Then, I started to go to the libraries for some books related to writing, before I began to find my way to write anything. Unfortunately, it was really hard for me to compose some article that is meaningful only by some books. While I started to think about some negative thought, I came out with an interesting thought. If I was limited by what these books were about, I would be those normal students who were only caring about the textbooks! After that, I made my first piece in my life, which also brought me my first championship! That was really kind of breakthrough for me ate that time. Although we can really learn something from those books which were written by others, that’s not really part of our knowledge. Only by doing by our hand and making something great, the experience will become our knowledge, and this will be our life-long skill. Relying on the books too much will destroy our creativity; we need to create our own way on the base of the books.
     There’s no denying that the knowledge can be learned from the books. Everyone does learn from the books in fact; however, those who really gave it a try and used it are less part of the people. Anyway, the writers need to have the experience first, and then he can write a book for the public. On the case of no related books, we cannot do anything? I don’t agree with that. Our descents were starting from nothing, and give the world to us. I regard this as a gift! Now, all I need to do is excelsior! I will improve a better world for my next generation! Start to move instead of watching movie!

The very bad news about the ship Sewol had happened for almost 2 months. Besides the captain, the Korean president Park Geun-hye may be the main character in this event, for she took the work of helping the sufferers to walk through this hardship. Unfortunately, she didn’t handle this well. I think no matter what had happened, it’s very hard for anyone to walk through their sadness. The sufferers needs helps and Park Geun-hye didn’t make it right. This is the main thing for her self-examination.

The issue about the fourth nuclear power plant had been discussed for years; however, there’s still the answer that can be accepted by everyone. In fact, there may not be such a wonderful answer. In my opinion, we should respect both side, or there will be no end for this issue. I think we need the nuclear power plant for now.  Because it is the most efficient power in our world. In Taiwan, which has less place and less resource, nuclear power plant is really necessary for Taiwan. On the other hand, the fourth nuclear power plant is really lack of consideration. Our government really need to think this issue twice, or the result will be really terrible.｀、

This problem may be the main fear of Asian country. Facing to such a big country, there’s lots of tense situation that Asian countries have to deal with. What’s worse, China is a republic country. I think this kind of enormous event should not be voted. This issue is too important for normal people to decide if we need the nuclear power plant. For now, most part of the society regarded the  nuclear power as something will destroy our world but produce any power. However, most of them don’t know how the nuclear power contribute to our society. Without nuclear power plant, Taiwan will run out of power, and we will lose the most important part of our world. As soon as I knew this news, I really think this captain is too ridiculous to do this kind of this. I had seen countless driver who was really full of responsibility. Some of them even contribute their life for the passengers’ life. Only for his own life, this captain chose to escape by himself and leave the rest of the passengers. Then, these innocent life just sacrifice for no reason. This captain had to face what he have to encounter next.

After the news is happened, it had been quiet a while that Taiwanese news have ignored it. However, it should be one of the most important news recently. While Taiwanese news is covered by student movement.
Anyway, since MH370 was disappeared, there have been countless people watching for the news holding the hope. Although it have been a long time, there is still some people looking for any chance. This news could be the last hope for them. This is one of the reason why Taiwanese news station need to put some emphasis on here.  Our world is not the whole world.

My opinion:
     At March 8, 2013, it is the day of Taiwanese Event against the 4^th Nuclear Power Plant. After a year, March 9, 2014 is the anniversary of it. For the seven-in-one election, most of candidates use it as a part of their political views. Although it seems that they are going with the crowd, the issue about 4^th nuclear power plant should be faced instantly.
     As the result, the issue about 4^th nuclear power plant becomes political from livelihood. After Fukushima nuclear disaster and Three Mile Island accident, nuclear issues start to become more and more important. Days after days, some people may forget about it. Unexpectedly and ironically, this issue is reminded for the election. Let's cut to the chase and get start it.     To the 4th Nuclear Power Plant, most of people only know that it pose threaten to environment without knowing that they are doubled-edged in fact. As the saying goes, "Never follow like sheep." It is also the most important proverb that Taiwanese should learn now. As we all know, if there are nuclear power, there will be nuclear waste and radiation pollution, and they pose threaten to our world without doubt. However, most of us don't even know the importance of the nuclear power. No matter how, there’s no doubt that the new nuclear power plant poses horrible threaten to our environment. In fact, that’s the main reason why those protesters oppose their will against the government for Lungmen Nuclear Power Plant. Without others concern, these protesters regards their activity as justice in our society. They consider themselves to be the justice by means of pursuing trends, ignoring what the fact really is. What’s worse, the protesters and the supporters don’t realize the others thoroughly. To make this easy to understand, first of all, I’d like to explain the reason why the supporters think we need Lungmen Nuclear Power Plant. Just like Mr. Stewart, who was the first person to promote the concept of environmentalism, says environmentalism needs nuclear power. It might sound crazy; however, nuclear power is not only much more effective but also environmental, for the resource the nuclear power plant takes is far below others power. Further more, the power created by the Solar Energy is extremely low. Another thing hard to believe is that the solar panels produce really high pollution. That’s what the information that the protester ignore is. Second, as soon as we mention the nuclear power plant, it’s the pollution it causes that we care the most. Then, we will start to concern about the Green Island, where we stored the nuclear waste; not knowing that the nuclear waste placed there was the lightest pollution, like the clothes. But where’s those high-pollution waste? The fuel rods taking 5 years long to cool down were stored in the cooling bays in Taiwan. Nevertheless, Taiwan is too small to store so many fuel rods. Just like you do to a full garbage can, they pull them into the cooling bays. The same thing kept happening several time until now they dud the same thing to the fuel rods. Then, recently, the government mentioned the foundation of the Lungmen Nuclear Power Plant. No matter which side you stand, there will never be absolutely collect; however, it’s we are not the sheep following the reed pipe blindly that what really matter is.

My opinion:

     Nowadays, most of us are living at his ease indoors without any awareness of the dark side in part of the world. As we are claim that it’s a world that we called it global village, we should put more emphasize on the events happening in other countries. Only if we can stand out for the underprivileged minority, will this world become better.

     First of all, I’d like to talk about the legitimacy of Crimean independence. The premise of Crimean independence is that they have to get the approval of the central government. If the central government does not approve the thought of independence, there will be countless public protests. Then, the government will suppress the riot by force of arms, and it’s the worst situation it can be. It’s so-called civil war. After the battle between government and the radical, if the government loses, the independence will become a war. In the meanwhile, if the radical lose, they are going to face the sentence of betrayal. The worst result is that both sides did not have the winner, the war will become massacre. They have to negotiate with the other side, and end up with draw or national disruption. In this news, if Russia makes a forced occupation, the so-called plebiscite is not legal, and will not get the national approval, even if the government loses the war. On the other hand, the intruders will be sentenced heavily. The occupied country can ask national help.

      Secondly, the future of Crimean independence is also worth of discussing. In my opinion, attended to the result of Crimean plebiscite this time, if this news is the prologue of Russian approval for the plebiscite, this situation will be exactly the same as Saddam Hussein’s annexation of Kuwait. If there’s going to have a war between Ukraine and Crimea, without the Russian support, there’s no way for Crimea to win the war, so we may think this news is good for Crimea; however, it’s not as simple as we thought it is, this could become double-edged situation. Assumed that Russia is going to have a war with Ukraine in public, America and NATO must have action. In that case, Russia will lose completely even if Russia gets the support from China.

     Last but not least, the influence of this news to Taiwan is also a question we can think about. If the situation happens like above, Ukraine must become the side of America and NATO. In this case, China will lose their army support from Ukraine, especially on Chinese aviation industry. On the other hand, Chine have to explain their claim of not involve in the politics of other country. Their support will become heavy influence in the future.

It's about the end of this semester, I had learned countless thing that I didn't know before. From the punctuation to the argument article, although it was hard when I got approach with them first time, for they were really different from Chinese way to compose. After about 4 months, It is really touching that we can do so much improvement; however, there still have long way to go. No matter what, we have to keep it up!

     After learning the way to use every kind of punctuation, Mrs.Chen started to taught us different kind of article. First of all we learned narration, different from Chinese, English narration emphasize more on the imitating narration but not comparison. This class really gave me lots of new information that I'd never been aware of before. I will keep working hard in this class.

     Entering SCU is kind of breakthrough to me, since it is really first time for me to study and learn by myself. There haven't been anyone that encourage or blame me for something. In others words, this is the first time for me to feel that I'm controlling my life without others bothering. Day after day, I started to get used to with this kind of new life gradually. In this class, we learned the basic way to use punctuation. Although it's really tricky and boring, Mrs.Chen said it's really important to use punctuation properly in our article. The Book I’d Never Read

     Among all the thing in our life, it's friendship that must be the most precious. When it comes to the issue, it will always remind me of the 14-year friend, Caroline.

     Everything can be traced back to 2001. Thanks to our fate, we get acquaintance with Caroline. The first day I met her still seems to be yesterday news to me. As soon as I knew Caroline, she had been an appealing and interesting girl, and I could feel something in my mind on the spot. Walking through 14 years and those countless hardships, we used to believe that nothing could separate us and we could be together for goods. However, no matter how great a party is, it will end, and so did us eventually. Last year, 2012, facing to our future, we had our first quarrel, for she wanted me to study abroad in America. Not knowing the reasons, I insisted studying in Taiwan or Hong Kong but not America. That was the first time for me to be stubborn, and the last time, too. Standing in front of the game of our friendship, I think that both of Caroline and I lost the game now. I missed her charming voice, short curly hair and the warmest heart that I had encounter. At the last day we met, it was a wonderful spring day; however, my heart was so cold that everything seemed to be frozen. The sunset of 14 years told us that we lost. That was the first time for me to face such sorrow emotion, and it was too heavy for me to bear, so I ran away. I ran away like a coward.

      That's how our story ended. After she disappeared as a shadow, the farther time went, the more I missed her. Starting to wander in my mind, I asked myself why this happened. There were a French book, L'élégance du hérisson, which was the last gift she gave to me, but I had never read it. Actually, I was afraid of reading the book, for that's my way to avoid the memory. Recently, I gave it a try to read the book telling about a mystery story but also appealing just like her. The story revolves mainly around the characters of Renée Michel and Paloma Josse, residents of an upper-middle class Left Bank apartment building at 7 Rue de Grenelle – one of the most elegant streets in Paris . A girl with a dream which is extremely different with others usual dream caused huge trend to literature of Paris. That’s committing suicide at her 13-year-old birthday, and she set fire to her home. However, due to my French is still too poor to finish the book, I hadn’t read the whole book, but I’ll hang on it! Though we may never meet the other, the book will always be the most precious thing for me.

     Nowadays, there will always be some corners that we had never taken a glimpse on in the society. In other words, it's the dark side of our world. The world full of gambling, drugs, drinking, smoking, just to name a few. A innocent girl of gentle birth lost her direction just for a gang boy who was carefree and bad. Upside down, and everything in his life became everything in her life. From books to guns, from classmates to gangster, the helpless girl started to walk on the edge of our world; however, there was no one could give her a hand. No one helped her. The fallen angel had lost on the fork of the path in her life. The place with violence but without care would happen endless sacrifice, and so did their world. A reckless hand took life from the boy's cousin in a fleeting moment, and it is this event that turned everything in her life into her deep fear. The boy who experienced such unaccepttable death changed into a cruel man. A cruel man with violence but without care. That's to say, he was part of the world. As we all know, no matter what, bad guys would run into their sentence sooner or later, including the cruel man. The fallen angel was faced to everything she didn't know and also everything she would never want to know. There's another fork on her life now. "What should I do now?" She asked herself this way, counting the day before the jail released that cruel man. She asked herself this way.

Something You May Never Know

     Among all the things in our life, it’s those touching moment that makes a trip so unforgettable. When it comes to the trip, I will always remember forever, one piece of my memory will flash into my mind instantly. I’ve been to Africa as a voluntary worker from Eden Social Welfare Foundation. Traveling to Africa was a kind of tough encounter, for you had to take some medicine or shot for fear of coming down with AIDS or other disease. However, everything would seems really worthwhile when you saw the smile on the faces of those extremely skinny orphans.

     I traveled to Africa as voluntary worker in 2011. It’s about 2 years ago, but when I try to memorize the trip, everything and every moment are just like yesterday news in my memory. Not only the kids living there but the environment also made me start to treasure what I had already got now. Everything I encountered in Africa was so astonishing to me at the First day. Left the quality of the drinking water, there was even little water if we didn’t arrive at there, so did those innutritious foods! What’s worse, it was really a unbelievable shock for me to believe that those orphans were brought up with these sorts of things. When I saw these children smile at me for my teaching or aid, I started to think this way, “Why can’t everyone in the world smile like them? The smile doesn't have other meaningless things. What’s wrong with us? We have already got everything we need!” Well goes the proverb, “ No matter how it changes, stay real.” It has been the motto that I always bear in my mind. Remember that treasuring what you have now, and being appreciated for who gave you these. There’s no scar that won’t fade away, so why is sadness still on you face?

More Than You Think

     For some personal reason, I chose the economy as my lesson for this semester. This chance made me walk into a world I had never thought about. Not only shocked but I also felt how small I was to this world. It was the first time that I got so close to the concept which is much more than I thought it was. Everything had to start from the 10 principle in economy, to make this short, I will just mention the important point. There're four factors that will influent the decision of the costomer. They are other choices, thing you have to give up, efficence and temptation. When you read the four factors you may think "I have understood them hundreds years ago." In the meantime, you are so wrong. Left first three of them alone, let's focus  on the fourth factor "temptation." As we all know, if the government raises up the tax of apples, the price of apples will raises relatively high, therefore, there will be more costomers buying pears instead of purchasing apples. At the same time, for making more profit of apples, farmers will hire more worker to work for them, so there are will be more apples for costomers to buy. That's how we see the "temptation" originally. But its meaning is more more than you thought. 

      Take the seat belt law for example, due to more and more drivers using seat belts for fear of being imposed a fine, drivers will start to think this way: " I use seat belt when I am driving. In other words, my life gets protection." This kind of thought brings countless accidents, for the drivers knows they are safe, so they won't drive so carefully. No matter if you are buying this, it's truth. Compared to the drivers died for car accidents, the number of the passengers died for car accidents raised incredibly high after the seat belt law is pronounced. This was not only just a concept of economy, it is a case that really happen in the world we live. Everything have both sides, and you will always take care of what you choose to do. 

About 1Q84

     For me, reading 1Q84 is a accident combined with lots of coincidence, I had never thought that I would encounter such a incident at that time.
    In 2011, if my memory served me right, it was a rare rainy day in that summer. I just got acquaintance with a geniuse that had been the first place in the whole school, he was really different from I thought he was originally. Well goes the proverb, "Never judge a book from its cover. " The incident reminded me again. As soon as he knew that I liked to read the novel of Haruki Murakami (村上春樹), he asked me to read 1Q84, for it's really an outstanding piece among his every novels. However, regarding it as unrespectation for the writer to reading his books without buying, I refused his kindness at that time. After a couple of days, 1Q84 Book 3 was republished, which made me became eagerer to 1Q84. Eventually, it happened one day on my way to home, I found a bookstore which was holding on sale for all the novels written by Haruki Murakami, purchasing 1Q84 without hesitation. It seemed to be an accident but I have never felt regretful for buying them, even now. In fact, I have never be so sure that I had to do it like that. On the spot, I could really feel something was pushing me. 

      That's why I read 1Q84. It was never an easy thing to remind everything in a book, especially the novels written by Haruki Murakami because of his plain and peaceful writing way; however, 1Q84 broke the ice of this kind of situation. Changing the way of composing is extremely hard mission for every writer, particularly when everyone didn't want Haruki Murakami to change, but he did it and did it amazingly. That's why 1Q84 caused such a sensation at the period. 

     The story used the concept of parallel worlds, which means when our world is processing, there're more than one different world is processing, too. In other words, there are others you doing other things in other worlds when you are reading my article now. The story is about two perallel worlds, which are our own world in 1984 and the other world (1Q84) has an usual moon and a blue moon. There are two main characters in the story, 天吾 (A male editor with great talent in narration but is not creative. )and 青豆 ( A female professional killer with great skill, working for a place protecting every bulliied females). They were classmates when they were in elementary  school. For 青豆 was bullied by classmates, 天吾's kindness grasped her out from desperation; however, they saperate for different junior school without knowing they loved each other.  Now if you start to think this book is soup, I can tell you that you are so wrong. After a decade, they were involved in 1Q84 in the same time without knowing each other but believing it. Both of they went through countless dangers which is really hard to describe. All I can tell you now is that it worth you. 

      Hope 1Q84 will have a good sell. 

Looking Forward

On May 13^th, 1995, to the expectation of my family, I was born in a township located in Northern Taiwan called “Danshui.”

    In my childhood, my family was an ordinary family. My father is an art consultant who loves to collect all kinds of art pieces and my mother is an attentive housewife. My older brother works as a journalist in SET, which is one of the most prestigious television stations in Taiwan. Despite the disparity in age between my brother and I, we have been on good terms with each other since my birth. Therefore, I am good at getting along with others. As the second child in my family, I am, however, not a dependent or spoiled child. Instead of it, for having an older brother, I always refer him as my idol and make every effort to be as prominent as him. Moreover, my older brother had a great influence on me, so I became more mature than my peers. I think that everyone should take his own live seriously and cherish every minute on this world. Our life may be hard and full of difficulties, but I really enjoy the process of overcoming the obstacles and completing the tasks.

     At the age of four, I entered Taipei Wego Private School, which is known for its diversified education. Growing up in such a complete humanistic environment, I learned the importance of principle and responsibility. When I was in grade 5, my brother won the championship in a contest of writing, which made our parents really proud of. It was this incident that developed my curiosity of literature. I was curious about how to transform Chinese characters into an attractive article. This was my first contact with the true language. Before long, I entered high school. For the purpose of catching up with my brother, I gave myself a shot in participating in my first contest of writing.

Out of my expectation, I got the first place in the contest. Being able to get the affirmation is the most inspiring experience that I had ever encountered. Therefore, I not only took part in more contest of writing successively but also accepted the instruction of the professional teacher. With the instruction of my teacher, my writing ability improved significantly.

My interest in language brought me to the world of literature. I have been enchanted by this creative world, so I have decided to major in English department. My aim is to explore the world of literature and the world of great writers, opening my eyes and cultivating my mind through this great world of literature. By this way, I can compose more articles which are not only beautiful but also inspirational. Entering SCU will be a great step of my path to success.

     As for my future, I plan to study oversea because of the great expectation aroused by the fascinating descriptions in many journals of students studying abroad. Consequently, I have been keeping watching for information of this aspect from friends, teachers and mass media. And then I see a lot of examples and elites which even strengthen my determination to carry out my dream! In the forth year in SCU, I will take the TOEFL and SAT tests and make applications for graduate schools in America. After my graduation, I shall go back to Taiwan and find a job in research institutes or companies. I want to be one of the literature students who have the privilege of studying great writers’ works and exploring their inner worlds, their outlook on life, their roles as learned scholars and their influences on the world. I hope I can also make some contribution to the awareness of culture and literature in our society since its importance has been neglected.  I learned a line from my English teacher, which is “Not until you give it a try will you not know the result.” I got passion and expectation for myself, and wish you would give me an opportunity to make my dream come true.

     In conclusion, I am quite sure of myself and always persisting in carrying out my plan for the future. To reach my goal, I have tried my best through carefully mapping out my schedule with a hope that my life will go just as I want.
